What can we do to show firefighters we care about them?

another brave firefighter died yesterday in new york city. i made cookies and bread the other week and gave them to fire depts. so what are doing or do you plan to do anything? and firefighters what would you like people to do more?

Most Firefighters I know appreciate any show of support from the people they serve. Here are a few ideas:

Donate food or gift cards to grocery stores for those who are on shift during holidays. I'd contact an officer to arrange this.

Review their budget; and ensure that your elected officials are funding their needs.....is equipment up to date....is training current.....are their fire houses well maintained. Do they have adequate disability, health, and life insurance?

If your fire department offers educational or citizen volunteer programs; participate in them!

Work with them to provide smoke and CO alarms to all residents. Help raise funds to do this, help inform people in your community that it is available.

Whenever you see them doing a great job; send a letter to their Chief or your elected officials praising them; maybe even write a letter to the editor of your local paper.

Donate money to your local fire company.  When you see one, wave or say thank you.  Bake cookies and drop them off one weekend.  Get involved in local happenings with the fire department, like toy drives, charities for MS, etc.  Be courteous when you see their emergency vehicles and move out of the way.  If they allow volunteers, you could volunteer.
