What can we learn from atom smashers (like the lhc)

I know we can discover new particles and such but how can that benefit the world?

Antimatter has been discovered in a particle accelerator environment. The  first antimatter particle discovered was the Positron, a particle with a similar mass as the electron, but with a positive charge.

Theoretically, which is all antimatter discussions are at the moment, when antimatter and matter collide, they cancel each other out. This cancellation discharges an immense amount of energy. If this is an accurate find, it could lead to an alternate high efficiency energy source. Of course the opposite is true, it could also lead to a weapon so heinous we will wish we never invented it.
