  1. you can learn alot.... they do use alot of science in the shows, proven science, not just theories.... but of course they also mix in fiction, some stretching of the truth and theories.

  2. We can learn a lot from Star Trek, not just science type stuff, but we can learn about society and ethics. We can learn about our society a lot from deep space nine.  The series really addresses social issues such as racism and war.  Ethics are also shown in Star Trek.  Voyager's Captain Janeway shows many examples of morals.  In one episode Janeway has to decide on whether or not to allow a Q to commit suicide, and in another Voyager episode, "Latent Image," the Doctor has a malfunction with his ethical and medical subroutines.

These are only examples of what we can lean from Star Trek, there are several books out there that show what we can learn such as: The Physics of Star Trek, The Ethics of Star Trek, and The Metaphysics of Star Trek to name a few.

  3. All aliens look like humans except they are different colors and have oddly shaped foreheads... lol

And Dr. McCoy is not a magician...

  4. They do reference a lot of real star names...fake planets..but..certain star names are real.

I don't think it's a matter of actual learning so much as..

The concept of Star Trek..did give man kind the inspiration to make real leaps forward toward the eventual traveling into space.

At some point or another...science fiction..in a lot of cases...turns into science fact.

In star Trek....not only do they reference real star names...but...they do reference a lot of actual scientific theory's that are in real practice.

A lot of scientists out there..did get their inspirations from Star Trek....which.. I believe.. is one of the reason's why the show..or other Star Trek shows are still popular today.

  5. Live long and prosper

  6. The secrets of the universe.

  7. That (WE ARE NOT ALONE)

  8. That if you can think it you can make it. Look at the cell phones they used. That was a highly unbelievable invention back then but is remarkably common today.

  9. That sometimes, resistance is futile.

  10. We learned that people are willing to have their atoms ripped apart and sent through space just because it's faster than taking a shuttlecraft.

We learned that people are willing to take part in a military style hierarchy even if they're just explorers.

  11. If you ignore the plot devices - warp drive and matter transmission, it's not bad.  Star Trek scripts are vetted by a staff Trek scientist.  That keeps the "Star Trek" science consistent.  Much of the science in Star Trek is accurate.

So a writer makes up a story.  They need some techno babble, and simply write <insert technobabble>.  The Trek scientist fills in the blanks.  They may also make suggestions to the plot as a whole.  From time to time, a script is unsalvageable, at gets shot anyway.  But at least an attempt is made.
