Question:

What can we mix with bluestone, for softer ridding surface?

The owner of the place I board at is trying to get information on different arena footings. We have a huge outdoor arena, with about 1 and 1/2 of bluestone. Even when it is dragged it is just too hard. What can we mix with it to retain moisture and add some cushion? Euro-felt, rubber...what are some pros and cons? We are trying to be as economical as possible. Thanks in advance!

  1. I like shredded rubber a lot.  It is expensive initially, but it lasts practically forever, can be mixed with other substances and is dust-free (no watering, no coughing, no clouds of dust)!  I've never done a breakdown expense-wise, but it would seem to me that rubber would probably save quite a bit of money in the long run, due to the fact that it is practically maintenance-free and lasts so long.

EDIT:  Oops, forgot to add that shredded rubber made of truck tires is metal-free.  I think most if not all rubber footing manufacturers have only metal-free products, but just in case...

  2. my coach is mixing chopped up tires with her sand.

  3. dig down about 6-8 inches and put river sand in it. sand is good for working horse in.
