Question:

What can we replace this tub with?

Our house was built in 1978...and it shows! One bathroom had olive green tub/toilet and the other has robins egg blue tub/toilet. Plus the bathrooms are very small. Just the typical narrow closet type bathrooms. We just got done remodeling the green bathroom and replacing the tub with a nice white one. In order to get it through the tiny door we had to get a two piece. In that bathroom the tub was on the right side of the room and the sink/toilet are on the left. However in the blue bathroom the tub is at the end of the room with the sink/toilet on the left wall. We realized today that it is going to be impossible to replace the blue tub with the same kind of tub we replaced the green. The pieces had to be assembled and then slid into place. The blue tub is too close to the toilet for that and even though the toilet will also be coming out, the floor area where the toilet connects will prevent the tub from sliding in. We aren't opposed to putting in a walk-in shower, but we don't want a little corner shower that is so cramped that you can't turn around. And we don't want to spend 2k on a glass block shower. Any suggestions on what we can do to fix this problem?

  1. Install a good cast iron tub and then have a pro. come in and install ceramic tile on the walls.

  2. There are fiberglass shower pans that are made for just your job. They make them in right or left hand drain to match the drains on your tub. You can either find them or order them from any major home improvement store or plumbing store. On a separate note the situation you described may require more finishing work but you can still get a tub in there by removing more of the wall material and maybe trimming some of the studs. I can see your problem the way you described it but will still insist that with some creativity and sawsall work you will be able to install a tub again. Hope this helps.

  3. Get a Vikryl 4 piece shower kit. It has a pan and 3 side walls. Comes with built in shelving towel and rag bars. Easy to install, but you may need to move the drain to the center.
