  1. yeah.. technically you are supposed to spend it on your living expenses that enable you to go to school... But I know people who will go and party on Bourbon street with their pell grant money.  The government will never know.  So, you *can* buy whatever you want with it.

  2. Pell Grant or similar?  These are supposed to be used on items that enable you to attend school.

It can mean make your car payment, pay your electric bill, grocery bill, etc.  Or it can be textbooks, supplies, fees, etc.

Really, unless you have to turn in receipts, there is no way to track the items on which your grant money is spent.

(of course your tuition must be paid and you probably have to maintain a certain GPA and student status)

  3. If it's a government grant for college, than the school will get the money and you will only get any money that is left over that hasn't been used on tuition. Most grants for college though usually get sent to the school first I think and then you will receive it to do whatever with if there is nothing left to pay for.

  4. You must have one h**l of a scholarship to have grant money left over that is issued as a refund check to help you pay educational and living expenses.  In fact, if you do have grant money left over issued as a refund keep in mind that it is taxable income under next years tax return.

Everyone who has told you that you can use it for educational and living expenses is correct.  And yes, no one is going to ask you where you spent it, but that does not make it right to go pay for a cruise to the bahamas, or a 50" flat screen TV with your refunds.    Most likely, if you are receiving a refund it is coming from having borrowed loans in excess of tuition and fees.  You should never use that money to pay for things that are not absolutely necessary as you are just increasing your overall debt burden.

  5. Most grants have restrictions on them, so it depends on what kind of grant you are referring to.  The grant is very explicit as to what you must use the money for.  If it is a school grant, you are supposed to use it to live on but they don't really put restrictions on it.
