My fiance has seizures due to a brain tumor. Lately we are experiencing difficulties being intimate because he is so sore from the seizures. I insist that we just wait, but he said he wants nothing to change...he wants to feel normal. What can he do to ease the soreness so that we can be "normal?"

  1. This can be difficult.  Many people are not as understanding as you, and don't understand the issues which remain after the seizure, since the person looks as if they are their normal self.  In fact, he is tired from the energy exerted, and the muscles are very tired, and sore from the expenditure of electrolytes.

Try to look at a seizure as a very hard physical athletic event.  The recovery is similar.  In addition to the medications, or VNS to control the seizures, he needs to rebuild the electrolytes with good nutrition, and possibly nutritional supplementation or re-hydration solutions.  Then he should do some light exercise/stretching to relieve the tightness in the muscles, and then soak in a bath or take a warm shower.  Understand, that if a person is prone to seizures, someone should be available in case he needs help while in the bath.

In addition to working with some of my patients with these issues, I had as many as 11 seizures in a day at one time due to brain injury.  I now have those controlled, but I used to have to work with the muscle issues frequently.
