How does a teacher know whether a child is progressing and reaching milestones appropriate to their age?

  1. Through consistent and constant one-on-one and observational assessment.

That probably depends on the preschool.  Where I work, we have a constant ongoing assessment of all the children in each class.  We are constantly taking anecdotal notes on each child in the classroom and what they are observed doing and saying.  We also observe behaviors during learning activities specifically designed to assess for development, and record those observations too.  All these observations are recorded and scored according to an assessment tool at regular intervals during the year.  Your child's teacher should be able to explain the assessment system she is using.  I know I am always pleased to hear such a question from my parents, and I enjoy sharing my observations and explaining how I determine where their child is developmentally.
