  1. depends on why they're swollen I guess. Advil is an anti-flammitory pain pill and it always takes the swelling down for me. If you got some kind of infection going on, get yourself to the dentist pronto. In the mean time, gargle with a solution of 80% hydrogen pyroxide and 20% mouthwash (for taste). Buy it and mix it yourself and save. Thats what the dentist will give you a perscription for but it's the same yet much more expensive.

  2. Some people come to the dentist when they experience swollen, painful gums and when their teeth and gums appear unsightly.  But what they do not know is that there are numerous reasons to visit a dentist.  Because people are afraid to ask, they lack the confidence to go and seek treatments.  Self-checking is recommended by dental professionals for us to be able to look and observe for any mouth ulcers that do not heal, gum inflammation causing red, bleeding and swollen gums, or any lumps, bumps or lesions on the lips.  All of these needs awareness.  Promoting health lifestyle, and the drive to reduce the intake of sugary foods and drinks can help save teeth that can last a lifetime for the reason that you can never replace it with something as good as the original.

  3. believe it or not, a warm washcloth and sleeping upright helps. ice slows the healing process down.

  4. It depends on the reason and extent of the swelling.  A professional cleaning is the best answer.  At home, flossing all areas and rinsing thoroughly with Listerine is the next best thing.  Sometimes, oral tissues respond to warm salt water rinses.  Also, ibuprofen has a good anti-inflammatory effect on oral structures.  Swelling is a sign of pathology and irritation.  Use some home remedies as a temporary solution until you can get to a dentist/hygienist.

The dentist will not give you a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and mouth wash.  Hydrogen peroxide and mouthwash does not require a prescription.  The dentist will likely give you a prescription for peridex or perioguard which is chlorhexidine gluconate.  This is an antimicrobial, prescription rinse.  It is not expensive.
