  1. don't excersise before you go to bed, you need to relax. don't watch tv or go on the computer an hour before going to bed because the screen keeps you awake longer. don't worry before going to sleep, drink some water. DON'T take medicines to help you sleep. the second you stop taking them, you WILL go back to your old sleeping patterns. be active during the day so you are actually tired when you go to bed. just a couple of tips...

  2. Have a good mattress. Don't use an old one. Tossing contributes to restless sleep.

If you are referring to "getting to sleep" as opposed to "staying asleep", getting to sleep can be improved through diet and exercise. Also, no lights helps with melatonin, the sleep hormone. Melatonin imbalances can give rise to sleep problems. I think most sleep trouble comes from environmental issues, ie, stress, medications, lights in the bedroom such as tv's, etc/

  3. 1. If you have kids, have them sleep in their own bedroom, own bed. If they don't want to leave your room, have them sleep in a sleeping bag, and each night move the sleeping bag a little, until they are in the hallway and back to their bedroom and bed. Get teens to bed earlier, and establish a kid's bedtime routine.

    2. Don't drink anything caffenated, such as soda, coffee, hot chocolate, etc, or eat anything sugary just before bed. Stick to water, juice, decaffenated diet soda instead. Keep cookies and milk by your bedstand for a midnight snack or just before bed snack. The tryptophan in milk will help you feel sleepy, but you need some carbs to get it where you want it to go in your brain, so that's where the cookies come in.

    3. Buy a new mattress if yours is old or uncomfortable. Don't worry about fancy coils and foam and toppers. The mattress that allows you to sink into a deep, natural sleep and wake up in the morning with aches is the one you want.

    4. During the day, get excersise! It tires you out and makes you sleepy. But make sure you finish at least 2 hours before bedtime.

    5. Unplug those night lights, lamps, candles, tealights, etc. Make the room pitch black. Buy curtains that are dark or heavy enough to not let moonlight shine through.

Read more in the April 2008 issue of Reader's Digest. The article is on page 140-149. It is a great article!!!

  4. Dont take sleeping pills or drink alcohol!

The last thing you need on top of a sleeping problem is a dependency on pills or alcohol!

    Sheesh.

There are many reasons as to why you may not be getting a full night of quality sleep.

It could be anxiety, stress, poor dieting, improper sleep techniques, lack of exercise, etc...

There are effective, NATURAL ways to fall asleep and get great sleep throughout the night.

    try www.getbettersleeptonight.com

they have a really good guide which helps you achieve a full night of satisfying sleep. i love it. :)

  5. As far as natural things you can do, I'm not really sure.  I've tried reading, relaxation techniques, etc. to no avail.  As far as medicine goes, I have to say Ambien works pretty well.  It doesn't leave you feeling hungover either.  If you go to this link: http://www.ambiencr.com/

you can get a free 7 day trial to Ambien CR.

  6. The important thing to remember from the start is that most people NEED between 8.5 and 9 hours of sleep a night! That being said... do not go to bed high or drunk! Stay away from late day caffeine... this will always improve sleeping habits. Get the recommended sleep for you and stay away from the above three sleep dangers and you will get the MOST from your sleep.
