  1. An AA degree should assist you in acquiring a job as a paraprofessional (aka teacher's aide).

Here is a game plan if you are interested. There are programs to encourage teacher's aide to return to school and gain a 4 year degree with teacher certification. The stipulation is that you will have to teach for so many years within a public school within the state.

It is my understanding that the program within my state pays 100% of the college tuition and books. Their is a contract which stipulates that you have to serve so many years in the classroom. Of course I do not think that is a sacrifice. I generally think it is 2 to 3 years.

My logic you get your education paid for 2 to 3 years while you get your bachelors degree. You take the teachers examination and pass it. You serve in the classroom as a teacher for 2 to 4 years (I think it is 3 years) - while getting your full salary ( the return on their investment in your education is the committment to teach for the designated number of years). At the end of that time you determine whether you will stay in the field. Likely, if you been within the field during that time and was successful then you will likely remain.

You have to look for these types of programs at the state level. Then the second thing is that you have to be employed as a para / or teacher's aide within a public school. That is my understanding of this type of program that is in a sense encouraging promotion from within. I know a few people who are currently pursuing this route to teacher certification.

  2. You could most likely become a substitute teacher with an AA. And a paraprofessional (teacher's assistant) does not need any degree in some districts. You could also use it to get a clerical job in school- registrar, treasure, principal's secretary.  However, in reality most people us an AA in liberal studies as a stepping stone to a Bachelor's degree.
