Question:

What can you grill in besides foil?

I've read recipes for pouch cooking on the grill. However, I'm not a big fan of alum. Any ideas for foil pacets & hobo dinners on the grill w/o foil? I've heard of seaweed & such but where do you buy that stuff?

  1. You can use cabbage leaves, but you'll need to tie them up with string. Soak the string first so it doesn't burn so quick.  You can also use banana leaves, you can get them from asian supermarkets.  They are sturdier than cabbage and won't burn so quick, but you'll need to find them first.

  2. Kind of tough as the pouch concept is to steam the food.  You could try a cast iron skillet that has a lid and that would probably work well.  Or a cast iron dutch oven would be another option.  Grill pans for the made for grilling would not give you the opportunity to enclose the food.  Banana leaves are another option, you can get them in specialty stores or order them on line.  Good luck.

  3. frying pan

  4. banana leafs

  5. The grill baskets are great.  Be sure to spray oil it generously.  There are (high heat) spray oils available specifically for grilling at the grocery store.
