What can you infer if two phyla are represented on the same or different branches of a phylogenetic tree?

  1. I expect them to be on the same branch. If they are on different branches I infer that the constructor of the tree disagrees with the taxonomist that constructed the phylum. I can't think of examples on the level of phylum but at the familail level, there was disagreement about the relationship of the giant panda and the bears.
