  1. I noticed that Calvin Borel seemed to be the happiest man

on the planet.  He has realized a lifelong dream.  Congrats

    Calvin.  You made it.

  2. The best horse clearly won and you have to be happy for Calvin Borel, who also rode in the final race on the card & was still acknowledging the fans during that post parade.

Hard Spun tried to steal it on the front end and how many critics are now going to point to the fast work earlier in the week as hurting his chances in going gate-to-wire.

Curlin ran better than I thought he would coming out of the second slot, but - if he's in good shape - deserves to enter the starting gate in Baltimore.

The Lone Star Derby is next week and Ohio Derby on June 2 - among other graded stakes - so there are plenty of opportunities for the 3 year olds to strut their stuff and win a couple of bucks.

  3. Now we all know why they call him "Calvin Bo-rail", he gave an awesome ride today. Even though I keyed Hard Spun in my tri, I did have an exacta box with SS + HS.

Coming from 19th to win was a beautiful sight, the view from the Blimp was great too. I was shocked when Luke Krybosch (sorry I probably butchered the spelling of his name) announced SS was in 19th, but I knew it was all over as soon as SS and Calvin got to the rail. To see it open up for them and SS only having to leave it to catch HS was amazing. He had ice water in his veins today!

WTG, Street Sense- Carl Nafzger- Calvin Borel. Congrats to Mr. Tafel also.

  4. Not sure how the Preakness will go but if Street Sense runs like that in New York, he'll take the Belmont easily.  If he wins in Baltimore, chalk this horse up as a Triple Crown winner.

    I guarantee it.

  5. well none of my dogs won so i feel as u do

    GO STREET SENSE GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. I did think Street Sense would keep a steady pace at the beginning and then pull into the lead, but I had no idea that he'd be second to last. That was amazing! And then that finish! No one could touch him.

Okay, I admit, while I thought S.S. would win, I was really pulling for Great Hunter. So I was a bit disappointed there. I also thought Circular Quay would do better, especially in the first part of the race.

Anyway, I'm VERY happy for Calvin Borel. Did you hear him in that interview just after his run? :)

  7. 2 horses came from the bottom 10 to be in the top 4.

    1. Street Sense (19th)

    2. Hard Spun

    3. Curlin (somewhere between 10th and 15th)

    4. Imawildandcrazyguy (20th)

The horses and jockeys basically battled back for redemption.

  8. this derby. wow

well, what can i say?! i know that SS probably wont win the Triple Crown. but thats ok. we have Nicanor coming up in 2009 so look out then! but y do u change ur favorite  horse if it didn't win the derby? i just read another Q u asked and it said u hate SS now. lol

but i understand u. i also love Curlin. but my new favorite horse right now is Hard Spun too. AND Curlin. i like them both! so them are my thoughts

  9. well first of all...  a couple months ago i remember some 12 year old girl on here saying she'd guarantee that Street Sense would not win this race.  You're funny...  you see someone with an amazing performance and they're suddenly your new favorite...  I don't mean to laugh at you or anything...  i just think it's cute.

um...  Scat Daddy: WTF??!?!?!?  and Imawildandcrazyguy managed to get 4th.  how the h**l did that happen??

as for Street Sense...  it was a pretty amazing run.  How did he end up with that perfect trip again?  I think the other jockeys wanted to give Calvin a KY Derby win, so they came away from the rail.  That would never happen in any other Derby.  He was very lucky.

So I didn't choose a winner...  but watching Calvin Borel finally win the Derby made it all ok.  I've never seen a more genuinely happy jockey.

I don't think you should be too disappointed in Curlin...  he still finished with a big lead over the competition that he had been facing (which I said was weak)...  Storm in May was way back there with Scat Daddy.  And Curlin beat some pretty amazing horses...  all of Pletcher's...  everyone except for Street Sense and Hard Spun.

Oh...  was anyone else really surprised to see Hard Spun run to the lead?  I know he's had those blazing workouts, but I still expected him to be waiting in the field somewhere.

There's one thing for sure: this Derby makes for one interesting discussion about the Preakness!
