I'm baking a cake and I'm making my own icing. The recipe calls for 2 cups of powdered sugar but I only have 1/2 a cup. What can I use for the other cup and 1/2?

  1. You typically can trade regular sugar and powdered back and forth on a ratio of 2:1. Just use 1 cup of regular sugar all together.

  2. put regular granulated sugar into the blender and press the button to make it powdered (don't forget the top of the jar)

  3. If you are out of powdered sugar, put regular sugar in the blender and process on high until it turns powdery. Be sure to stir up the sugar on the bottom a couple of times so it all turns out to be the same consistency. Measure out the amount needed for your recipe!

    Hope this helps :0)

  4. go to one of the recipe sites like http://www.recipezaar.com and find a different recipe for your frosting/icing.

You could of course put the regular granulated sugar in the blender or food processor and powder it then add the 1/4 cup to 1 cup of corn starch to make your icing, but that is too hard.

Suggestion?? don't put the traditional icing on the cake, put a tart glaze on it!!  1/2 cup orange juice concentrate or lemonade concentrate with the powdered sugar will make a lovely glaze but is not icing.

  5. Substitutes:

Mix 1 cup granulated sugar + 1 tablespoon corn starch in blender until powdery, stirring often

OR (to sweeten whipped cream) artificial sweeteners (add after cream is completely whipped)
