I heard something about not being able to take certain medications when you were on birth control. What are you allowed to take?

  1. YAZ is different from other birth control pills because it contains the
progestin drospirenone. Drospirenone may increase potassium.
Therefore, you should not take YAZ if you have kidney, liver or adrenal
disease because this could cause serious heart and health problems.
Other drugs may also increase potassium. If you are currently on daily,
long-term treatment for a chronic condition with any of the medications
below, you should consult your healthcare provider about whether
YAZ is right for you, and during the first month that you take YAZ, you
should have a blood test to check your potassium level.
    • NSAIDs (ibuprofen [Motrin, Advil], naprosyn [Aleve and others] when
taken long-term and daily for treatment of arthritis or other problems)

  2. Advil IS an anti-imflammatory (NSAID) so you CANNOT take it while on Yaz. Tylenol, however, is NOT an NSAID and will not interfere with Yaz.

  3. Read the information that came with your Yaz pills. It specifically states under the drug interaction section that you should NOT take Ibuprofen, Advil, Tylenol. You can take aspirin.
