He was a very intelligent man, and a very ambitious man proud to have achieved as much as he did despite a humble background. He was probably cheated of victory in 1960 and became more paranoid, which led to abuses of power once he became president. He achieved some good things and some historic things (mainly opening diplomatic relations with Red China), but will largely be remembered for the scandal that ended his presidency. Why?

37th president.  Started serving in 1969 and resigned in 1974 so that an impeachment wouldn't end up kicking him out.  It all started during the 1972 presidential campaign.  Burglars were caught breaking in the Democratic headquarters in the Watergate hotel in Washington DC.  Nixon's involvement was not suspected at the time and he won the election by a landslide.  But a congressional committee learned about a presidential tactic of recording everything that was said in the oval office, (the president's office.)  The tapes were subpoenaed and proved that Nixon tried to orchestrate a cover up protecting people working for him.

He was also a California governor and a vice president during the administration of Dwight Eisenhower.  He lost a close presidential election against John Kennedy in 1960.  I believe he got most of the popular vote but lost in electoral votes.  He was elected president in 1968 defeating then vice president, Hubert Humphrey.
