  1. you may want to have a look at how the geography effects where the stages of production are located.  For example with cattle finishing animals typically are fed a carbohydrate dense diet, thus their location throughout the midwest through the corn belt where feedstuffs are readily attainable.  The parentstock will be more widely dispersed, as cows typicaly require more fibre in their diet i.e. grass, and grasslands aren't as valuable as land that produces corn/soy crops,  many cow/calf herds are located in Montana, Alabama, Florida, Texas, but again the finishing takes place in the midwest.  The American ethanol policy has reduced the availability of corn in the midwest, diverting it to ethanol production and increasing costs for finishing animals; this will change the marketing channel significantly likely leading to the practice of finishing closer to home utilising different opportunity ingredients rather than adding freight costs to shipping the animals to the midwest for finishing.  How this will effect the value added chain, the packing industry remains to be seen but likely we will see plant closures and relocations.

  3. Cattle:  Meat (veal-from baby calves, beef-from older animals, tripe [lining of the first and second stomachs] that some people eat, organ meats [ex. tongue]), leather, glycerin (used in toothpaste), bone (used to make dice), hooves (used for dog toys), insulin (taken from the pancreatic gland and used for insulin-dependent diabetics).

Chickens: Meat, feathers (sometimes used in pillows/down coats instead of goosefeathers).

Pigs: Meat (ham, bacon, sausage), feet (some people like to eat them), ears (used for dog toys/treats), chitterlings (hog intestines..some people eat that too), pigskin (for clothing).

Hope this was helpful and good luck on your project!! =]

  4. Another element of farming is the grazing of sheep on high lying land and moorland. Moorland grazing keeps the grass short and sweet thus helping other wildlife to survive. Sheep are used in areas that would otherwise be unsuitable for any other type of farming. Although in some areas sheep have been removed in order for some flora species to recover, as they will eat almost anything.
