Tell me anything and everything you can about gorillas. Diet, differences between mountain and lowland, childcare, lifestyle, anything at all. Websites would also be helpful.

  1. Great Apes including Gorillas, Orangutans and Chimpanzees belong to the order 'Primates' which also includes human beings. Gorillas are the largest of the 'Primates' and are divided into five sub-species: Western Lowland Gorillas, Eastern Lowland Gorillas, Mountain Gorillas, Cross River Gorillas and Bwindi Gorillas. All five sub-species belong to the family 'Pongidae'. Each sub-species has its own classification:

Western Lowland Gorilla - 'Gorilla gorilla gorilla'

Eastern Lowland Gorilla - 'Gorilla gorilla graueri'

Mountain Gorilla - 'Gorilla gorilla beringei'

Cross River Gorilla - 'Gorilla gorilla diehli'

Bwindi Gorilla - no scientific name as yet.

Both the Cross River Gorilla and the Bwindi Gorilla are more recent classifications of Gorilla sub-species.
