Question:

What can you tell me about (life in) Edinburgh?

What is the overall environment like? What are the inhabitants of Edinburgh like? Is it a worthwhile location to live in for someone in their mid 20's?

What are the Scottish like?

Any feedback is appreciated but please don't copy and paste something off wikipedia (I can access that info. myself). I'm looking for first hand knowledge.

  1. Great place, great life, couldn't be better, go for it you will love it.

  2. I lived in Edinburgh a good while. It can be pretty cold and wet, although summer and the long light nights are great. It's very hard not to get attached to it, you keep can keep on discovering beautiful new spots. There is seaside, hills, crags, parks, footpaths, canals etc all right in the city. It's also a good size, big enough with loads to explore, but small enough to get around easily. In my opinion is quite unique in feeling safe, and many of it's rougher areas are kept pretty far out of the city, whereas in eg Manchester/London they are all right near the city. Luckily there are plenty of reputable areas, and it's priced much better than London for housing/flats.

The service I found to be generally a bit friendlier than where I live in the south-east. As for Scots, well, many are friendly and less reserved than the English. A small minority of idiots don't like the English, but you shouldn't notice this much or let it put you off a great city. Most will be welcoming, but as I say you might have to be used to people being a bit less reserved. There are loads of English people there besides anyway. The Scots do have a different culture though so you might notice that humour, manners or attitude just seem slightly different, subtle thing really hard to explain. Overall, if you are really unto England and Englishness then you might miss your English roots or being part of England. Other than that you'll probably love Edinburgh as many do.

  3. hi,edinburgh is friendly, vibrant, cosmopolitan and great for all ages, lots to see and do,i never tire of it,word of warning!accomodation can be expensive, council housing, forget it unless you have deep connection with city and are willing to wait for years(24000 on list!)scottish people are very friendly and edinburgh is good for meeting all types of folk

  4. My ex lives in Scotland, and so I've spent quite a bit of time there as a visitor.

It's a very pretty city, but can be very cold. The city centre is on two levels, which can get incredibly confusing (especially when drunk!)

Sometimes the entire city smells like hops, but generally it's a well run, friendly place to be.

There are a lot of students and graduates in the city, so someone in their 20s would fit in well.

One thing I wouldn't recommend- the Edinburgh Hogmanny. It's awful. You stand in the freezing cold for hours, then get squashed next to a load of random people, and they don't even do a countdown to midnight. We had to just guess!

  5. They dislike the English, and it's very cold most of the year, don't say i didn't warn you.

  6. edinburgh is a good place to when ur twenties but like most places there is good and bad most scottish ppl are friendly

  7. I would move to Glasgow rather than Edinburgh if you are in youre 20's.

Its more 'happening', people are friendlier etc x

  8. One of my favorite place in Europe. People are really friendly and nice pubs....the only problem is the rain.....I was wet a lot when I arrived at work:)

  9. Its very cultural and artistic with nice architecture. Large enough to have all the attractions nearby but small enough to be pleasant.

Quite Cosmopolitan and has a relaxed attitude. Recently voted best place to live in the UK by popular show "Location, Location,Location"

Cold and grey in the winter but lovely in the Summer - especially during the festival.

I rate it as much better than London though its much smaller and has less attractions but is much safer - make sure you wrap up well though - quite chilly but sunny in the summer.
