I will be staying there in May. Cafes? Shops? Restaurants? What are the sites not to be missed?

Also, how far is it from the Louvre?

  1. It is very beautiful

Is a "Young" quartier full of beautiful restaurants, pubs.

If I well remember is non very close to louvre but is not a prblem because you can use the underground. Paris is so big that is impossible non to use the metro (extremely big)

  2. I stayed (many years ago) in the Quartier Latin.  Lovely!  Lots of cafés, restaurants...Right across the river from Notre Dame.  I stayed right across the street from the Lycée du Sorbonne (I never have figured out if that was THE Sorbonne or a prep school...no one was around...it was vacation).  Lots of students in the area.  Lots of schools and a very student-y atmosphere.  I loved it.  But then, I was in Paris.  Who wouldn't?  Check for a little bar called the Quasimodo.  I think it was actually in the Île de la Cité, right across the Place from the Cathedral.

You'll be right in the center of everything, though, and if you don't want to walk, the Metro stops right there at Place St. Michel, for a quick trip to anywhere.

  4. The one thing that I can stress is that you should not miss a nice long stroll through the Luxembourg Gardens.  In May, it will be incredible.  Also, the Palais Royal (across from the Louvre) will be lovely.  Remember that the Louvre will be on the opposite side of the river from where you're staying...

  5. What number (arrond.) are you staying in?  I stayed in the Marais area near Centre Pompidou recently and loved it. I could walk everywhere....

  6. It is actually very beautiful. It is also accessible to many places around Paris because of its central location. It is the center of all tourists at night. It has great bars and restaurants that offer menu's (3 course dinners for a set price!!!) The Louvre is just up the Seine River. It is actually very accessible from many metro locations. The Latin Quarter has the best book stores in town. Enjoy your trip

  7. The term "Latin Quarter" usually refers to the 5th arondissement on the Left or south bank of the Seine.

Within or directly adjacent to the 5th there are a variety of sights including the Cluny Museum, the Botanical Gardens and Museum of Natural History, the Arena Lutece (the old Roman arena), the Luxembourg Gardens and the Palais de Luxembourg (now the French Senate), the Pantheon, the Rue Moufetard Market, Place du Contrescarpe. Notre Dame, Saint Chapelle and the Conciergerie are directly across the river on the Ile de la Cite.

The Louvre is a pleasant 15 or so minute walk from the Place St. Michel.

My favorite little restaurant is in the 5th. La Methode at 2 rue Descartes is moderately priced, very friendly and the food is great. My favorite hangout is Aux Trois Mailletz at 56 rue Galand just off the rue St. Jacques a major north/south street running thru the Latin Quarter.
