  1. The Netherlands  is the European part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, which consists of the Netherlands, the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba in the Caribbean. The Netherlands is a parliamentary democratic constitutional monarchy, located in Western Europe. It is bordered by the North Sea to the north and west, Belgium to the south, and Germany to the east.

The word used to refer to the people and language of the Netherlands, and anything indigenous to the Netherlands, is Dutch.

The Netherlands is often called Holland. This is formally incorrect as North and South Holland in the western Netherlands are only two of the country's twelve provinces. Still, many Dutch people colloquially refer to their country as Holland in this way, as a synecdoche. For more on this and other naming issues see terminology of the Netherlands.

The Netherlands is a geographically low-lying and densely populated country. It is popularly known for its traditional windmills, tulips, cheese, clogs (wooden shoes), delftware and gouda pottery, for its bicycles, its dikes and surge barriers, and, on the other hand, traditional values and civil virtues such as its classic social tolerance. An old parliamentary democracy, the country is more recently known for its rather liberal policies toward recreational drugs, prostitution, homosexuality, and euthanasia.

  2. There are already two long and informative answers, and I'm not going to repeat the information provided in them, as I don't think there's any need.

While most people speak English, a fair portion of the population do not speak it very well, particularly when you go further away from the built-up West. The closer you get to the German border, the more like you are to encounter people who speak German rather than English. And the local dialect is the same on either side of the border, which is kind of nice ... just goes to show that borders are artificial, when you think about it.

People use bicycles rather a lot to get around. Indonesian food is almost a staple, and has influenced native Dutch cuisine. The Netherlands is a very rich country, because of its trade with both the far East and the West Indies, and you can see this in the big cities that date from the Golden Age era. The only city that really does not show this is Rotterdam, as it was destroyed in WWII, but rebuilt in a modern style. The Dutch in general are a very resourceful and efficient crowd, and it's not exactly a boast when they say 'God made the world, but the Dutch made the Netherlands' - it's much closer to the truth than many realise, as a good two-thirds of the country is reclaimed land is what was once the Zuyder Zee, but is now the IJsselmeer. And over the centuries the Dutch have made huge contributions to the world of art: Rembrandt, Vermeer, and later Van Gogh, Mondriaan, and many others. New York-based artist Willem de Kooning was born and trained in the Netherlands.

  3. Well, first of all, I just give you a link:

After that I could tell you something about Netherlands, couse I moved here 3 weeks ago. Not so much time to know around, but enough to make an opinion. People are nice, friendly and open. Everybody speaks English. The land is really flat, no mountains, no hills, but green everywhere... and   a lot of water. It's full of water and boats. Amsterdam is great, many tourists, a beautiful mixture of old and modern architecture. Let's not forget the Red Light District with tons of cafes, coffee-shops and girls in windows :)

  4. The Dutch people made the Netherlands, up to 95% of it anyway. The people are sociable helpful and courteous.

  5. their land is partly under sea level, so they have dikes to keep the sea back
