Question:

What can you think of that is not made of any material thing in the universe?

I asked this previously in a different section, but I thought I'd try again in a different section as recommended by answerers.

One great answer I received was "gravity", another was "empirical behavior", also known as instincts. The born given knowledge of how to breath, eat, and move.

Can you think of anything else?

Any other thing in our universe that seems to come from nothing? No material basis?

Please, NO RELIGIOUS ANSWERS. This is a LOGIC and SCIENTIFIC question, not a faith based question.

I don't want to hear any "God..." explanations. It is a poor argument, and I will delete them if possible.

  1. oh you mean you dont want answers that involve like particles and so forth? (like light, colours, sound etc.)

cause thats impossible for humans to answer. The human eye can only detect physical aspects of the universe: light, colours, air.

we only have 5 senses, and none of them allow us to go beyond particles and molecules.

this may be deleted cause my only answer is our Spirit, or Soul.

its the one thing that cannot be scientifically proven.

ANYTHING that science can prove is made up of molecules. so you're asking an impossible and very illogical question

  2. I was going to say light, but that may not be entirely true.

Oh I got it, " vacuum".

  3. The "I Am" is completely abstract... no matter whatsoever.

Socrates was speaking of this when he said "Know Thyself." He was speaking of the abstract essence of who you are.

  4. Three examples:

In 1962, a disc of light was filmed by several "sceptical" individuals, close-up, as it materialized in thin air at Garabandal, Spain.  It's appearance was predicted, and its appearance contradicted several basic, universal laws of physics.

Intentionality, or the desire by a human to see something change, without doing any visible work to effect that change.  This is statistically and rigorously documented by Dr. William A. Tiller at http://www.tiller.org and in his books, e.g. "Psychoenergetic Science."

Form, as a precise geometric process in-forming mass, etc.  (Higgs field, etc.).

  5. All things that exist with the realm of matter are material. Matter cannot enter into anti-matter, but anti-matter can enter into matter. The only problem being, that matter and that made of matter cannot sensually see that which is anti-matter. Anti-matter cannot be perceived through the agency of material senses, due to it's being anti. Take care. GOURANGA GOURANGA GOURANGA

  6. Air

    the will to want

    perception

  7. The love I had when I first saw her in August 1980.  The love I felt when we first kissed and made love.  The love I felt for her when we got married and had 4 beautiful children with her.  The love I will always have for her, until I die.

  8. Thoughts.

Also would like to note that simply because there exists abstractions that have multiple conditions to qualify a concept like gravity or instincts strictly speaking they do not come from nothing.

No thing in the universe comes from nothing.

Even gravity and instincts have causal relationships with physical phenomena.

I would say the four dimensions but some one else already said gravity and according to general relativity gravity is curved space time, so you basically already have that answer.

  9. I disagree with gravity but think emotion in any form is a great answer, which brings me to "Logic".

  10. Wow, you are really picky about answers on here.  Maybe you shouldn't be asking the general public what they think.  You should get together a group of people who will give you the answers you want, then ask them to write them down.

    Delete away!

  11. Thought is a function of the brain, which is made of matter, so I reject that as an answer (obvious proof: if the brain is altered, the thoughts are altered.  This would not be so if the thoughts were "spirit" in nature)  This also rules out emotional states and behaviors.

Light appears to be both wave and particle (photons.) So it is material.

Antimatter is just matter with a negative charge (other statements about it here read as gobbledygook), so it is also material.

There might be some forces (electromagnetism, gravity, the strong and weak nuclear forces) that count, but these, too MAY simply be the effects of particles, the nature of which we are not yet aware. (We've postulated things like "gravitons," paticles which would carry gravity.)

So, I would say MAYBE some forces.  Otherwise, space and total vacuum.

  12. Energy

  13. air

  14. You can't think of something that does not have a basis in material nature.  That is the limit of the mind.

For instance, you cannot think of pure gravity.  You have to relate gravity to something you can think about, such as an apple falling to the ground.  Then you postulate the concept of gravity, which is built around objects and their observed behaviors.  You can't think about just plain gravity.

Similarly, empirical behavior needs a being to behave empirically.  Without the material counterpart to lend your conception substance, the concept disappears.

Material reality is the basis of intellectual thought and a person cannot supersede that.  What you CAN do is EXPERIENCE the pure consciousness, the place Lao Tsu calls "the darkness of darkness."

But you cannot think of it : )

  15. A rock.

  16. Time

    ... kind of debatable though.

  17. this is not a religious answer: religion and hope, the need to feel something higher than ourselves, the need for hope.

  18. Colors, they're just perceptions our eyes see because of how our eyes were made.

  19. I understand that you want no religious answers but this has a lot to do with religion even if you do not realize it. I think that a logic and scientific question should also include a religious section just so that everyone reading it can also have another view. Besides without God there is no logic or science.

So after I say that my answer is love.

Not just the love that i can give to a relative or spouse but the everlasting love that God gives us.

I will also say inspiration. As an example I say the inspiration God gave to the mere mortals who wrote the Bible.

Another thing i will say is knowledge. My example for this is  the knowledge God gave to Solomon. Remember he was the wisest man on Earth besides the Son of God (Jesus)

  20. You, since your mom and dad didn't need any materials in your conception.

Edit: Are you going to delete me? I didn't mention God in this.

  21. lien, cheating, selfishness, hate, pride, ego, lust, arrogance, sickness, and disease, jealousy, and moreover just plain bull$$$$. They are all evil spirits.

  22. Dark Matter.
