What car do you reccomend second hand?

I want to buy a decent 2nd hand car for under $8000. Are VW's good? What about servicing and parts? I have also been looking at Hondas?

If you are looking for a choice between VW and Honda, I would most definitely go with a Honda. They are more reliable, less expensive to fix (parts wise) and usually have higher resale value.

Check out Scion TC's (Toyota), somewhat the equivalent to a Honda civic.  Good mileage and look very nice.  It is 2 doors, has big leg room in the backseats.  It has great acceleration and moves great.  I used to have one and I miss it.  You can get 2005 or newer. If they cost a little more than $8000 you can bargain with the dealership or private seller.

Honda and Toyota have the best re-sale value of any auto maker. They are also the most fuel efficient and in this day and age that's always a plus.

They generally last A LOT longer and are a lot more reliable than american or german manufacturers. Their parts and labor tend to also be less expensive and more readily available.

European cars are highly regarded in NZ. Which translates to mean at the same price level, a VW will be older and more unreliable than the same priced Japanese car. Those who buy them don't mind more repairs and higher priced parts because they consider their Euro cars a cut above a Japanese one. Not a sentiment  I share.

Go for your standard Toyota, Honda. and $8000 gets  a good car. If you are traveling, you will find then easier to repair if you have a problem in  small country town as well.

i reccomend an asian car or a european, hondas are ok, i would go with something like a volvo. VW are ok but they dont seem to do so good in the long run

Don't get a VW - especially the older ones - very hard to get parts.

Honda cars are great, they keep going and going .. easy to get parts and cheaper all rounder.  A popular NZ car!

Hondas are GREAT!!! They will run forever and if they do break there are parts everywhere for them!!! They are a wonderful reliable car :)

My husband once asked a tow-truck driver what type of  vehicle they tow most often, and he said VW's.  Considering there are more Honda's on the road than VW's that's really saying something.  A Honda Civic is also way better on fuel than a Jetta, for example.  Check out Toyotas as well.

If you stick with a popular model of used car, such as a Civic or Tercel, etc you can often get parts from the auto wreckers, which is much cheaper.  VW's are known for expensive parts, and expensive service.  (BTW my husband used to own a Jetta, we used to have a Civic, and now we have a Corolla)

Any foreign vehicle will cost more when it comes to parts and maintenance, BUT they are more economical.  Honda's and Nissan's have been good to me.

Honda def. Honda!  I bought mine when it had 30,000 miles on it and now I have 130,000, and it still drives as good as the day I got it.  Parts are very common and available.  The technicians at Honda told me I just barely broke it in.  She will last for years and years to come.
