  1. The most fuel efficient car is something the average person would not tolerate.

You can build a four passenger car that has just 40 hp and it can drive 75 mph.  Its been done... it was called a 1959 VW Beetle.  Outstanding gas mileage.

The problem is.. the little 40 hp motor gave it 0-60 in about 2 minutes.  Drivers demand 0-60 in under 14 seconds now or they don't want to drive the car.

The higher the performance.. the lower the fuel economy.

    Softer ride reduces fuel economy...

Wider tires for more traction reduces fuel economy.

It would not be hard to build a car that can get 60 mpg without it being a hybrid...  But no one would buy it.  And the DOT wouldn't let it on the road.

Built SOLELY for fuel economy, a hybrid could get 200 mpg... but it wouldn't have AC.  It wouldn't be able to go over 45 mph.  It would have a very rough ride. and it would barely be able to hold 20 mph going up a hill.

  2. One that you pedal yourself, so no fuel other than your normal food would be used.

Next would be a vehicle like the sedan chair, carried by slaves, or one carried by efficient animals.

And then one totally powered by solar energy beamed in from space, so we did not have to burn fuel on earth to generate electricity to power it.  Or have large losses in long transmission lines.

  3. Im not sure if your asking which mass produced cars are the most fuel efficient or in general what type of car is most fuel efficient.

Obviously, a car that goes not use fuel would be most fuel efficient. Some examples would be an electric car (a Tesla) that you plug in at home where you use solar power to generate the electricity. Another example would be a hydrogen buring car, or hydrogen fuel cell car where you produce the hydrogen from water with solar or wind power.

As far as what is out there on the market right now, the Tesla, but its about $100,000.

The prius which is very affordable, plus you get tax rebates. You can also get some solar panels for the top of the car and a aftermarket modification that allows you to plug it into any receptical. Doing all of this can basically allow you to not have to buy fuel unless you are going on a very long trip (over 200 miles) where you would be getting about 125 miles per gallon.

  4. An electric car.

Low fuel costs + low repair costs + no use of oil in motor + cheaper to run + regenerative breaking can recapture energy + electricity can be generated from the sun or wind...

If you ask me this again in 5 years time, I can almost guarantee you will find the same answer...
