What career choice to take? Engineer/Lawyer/Business?

Alright, I'm coming up to my senior year in high school and I'm starting to apply to colleges. While I know it isn't for a long time to come, it's time for me to find out what I want to major in and what I want to do with my life. So many of my friends already know exactly what they want to do and I feel so clueless. I don't want to be one of those people who keep switching majors and is unsure of their life.

While I need to do something I'm good at, let me set it straight that I'm pretty much mediocre at all subjects. While I don't excel in any of the four core classes of math, science, english and history, I can do decent in all of them and get good grades.

As vain as this sounds, I would really like a high paying job coming out of grad school. I have excellent grades, good SAT scores and loaded extra curricular activities and will hopefully get into the University of Virginia.

I know that to be a lawyer requires a major and I was considering engineering as my major since it's not typical of lawyers and I could fall back on that degree after retiring, etc. While it's always been a thought to be a lawyer, I realize that they work long hours and are often unhappy. My ideal choice would to be a corporate attorney, except I know it's difficult to attain that role. Another career I've considered is business, because there are a lot of social relations and I have good social skills. However, my mom keeps telling me how hard it is to make it in the business world. (Personally, I don't think she's giving me an objective view of things, which is why I'm on here) So if some light could be shed on all these issues that would be great. (I'm really stressing out about college and the future right now in case you couldn't tell...)

  1. OK, that's the problem -- you're on the Internet, asking others what you ought to do with your life, career-wise. If you have no concrete interests, hobbies, etc., you probably won't be satisfied with your life, or at least not very satisfied. If I were you, I'd really think about what you like best before making this decision. If you can't find anything you like, explore a bit.. don't settle for a "high-paying job," esp. if it's boring. And the choices above? Boring, in my opinion.. corporate lawyers are unimaginative hacks, business people often hate the grind (although with engineering, at least you're interacting with the world in meaningful, almost artistic, ways).
