  1. Archaeologists possibly have the most commerical opportunities due to land management laws that require an archaeological survey prior to development.

Linguists are also highly sought after in the speech pathology & code breaking fields.

Physical/forensic anthropologists work to solve crimes or mysterious deaths through examination of the bones.

Social anthropologists can work with advertising, government policy, international business relations, urban planning, public health - anything that requires an understanding of human behavior.

    Field  research, museums, and academics.

  2. I can only tell you about the options available for Anthro's in Australia. There are 3 main areas where they are employed 1 doing cultural heritage surveys for the government. 2. working as consultants for the mining industry or 3 working for a museum. There are currently Jobs a plenty  for anthro's in the mining industry.

To get a job you need a masters degree in Anthropology

  3. i'm studying anthropology...and personally feel that there is a lot that i can do with my degree.  although... my goal isn't money... i'm studying anthropology because i'm crazy in love with it.

the one thing that anthropology allows me is the ability to travel as a career.

your best bet is to pick a specialization within your field...which you will ultimately need to do anyway.  you can really specialize in anything...  my specialization is peace and conflict studies.

you can work in museums, as a researcher, work for the government as a social researcher, work in non-profit, travel and just do archaeology digs... be a writer, photographer, artist...

you can do a great number of things...but you really need to specialize (get your masters or PHD)...but it is an extremely academic environment...and as with any academic field...you have to have the brains to back it up.  it's hard to be on top of a field that is constantly changing...but if you're up for it... it can definitely take you places.

but quite honestly...you have to be multi-talented.  most anthropologists are known (if they're known)  for being writers...and for working for networks like Discovery and National Geographic.  but that requires many different skills...

personally...i'm a writer and a photographer.  my specialization is in peace and conflict which allows me the possiblity of working as a mediator for the U.S. Government or in conflict resolution situations for other countries.  i am also a humanitarian and an activist...so i have options.

in a few years i'll have the Peace Corps on my resume as well.  the best way to get ahead is to get an internship under an already well established anthropologist...and help lay groundwork for new research projects.

as with many fields...its who you know...and how they can help you.

    i've been blessed in that...

a word of advice...make friends with your professors!

they are the first real connections that could serve you in the future.

thats how i've really excelled so far.

    references are everything.

    all the best,

    ashley

  4. Most people with liberal arts majors like this end up going to grad school, either to further Anthropology-like studies (i.e. Archaeology, Folklore studies, Sociology, History) to go onto teaching and doing fieldwork, law school, or work in human resource/media positions.  I have friend who was an Anthropology major now high up in NBC.  Just remember to internship and build your other talents (maybe writing?  go onto journalism?) to make yourself more marketable.

  5. Answer questions in the anthropology section of Yahoo!answers or teach anthropology. I'm not being a smartass-those are your optionsl.

  6. anthropology is only a good major if you want to go on to get your masters or phd. a bachelor's in anthro will get you no where. i'm hoping and trying hard for a museum job and i'm probably still going to have to go back to school for a art history degree.

try sociology, i wish i had.
