Genetics is a broad subject, isn't it? So what types of careers are offered in it? When someone goes to collage to study genetics so they can get a job in it, what kinds of jobs are they looking to get? What types of genetics sciences are out there?

  1. Here's a short list of specific careers that people with university degrees in genetics often choose:

Research Associate (typically requires a M.Sc. or higher)

    Lab Technician

Lab Manager (typically requires a M.Sc. or higher)

    Professor (requires Ph.D)

Instructor (term for someone who teaches at a university, but is not tenure track and does not do research as a major component of their job).

Genetic Counselor (typically requires a B.Sc. and post graduate professional program - VERY competitive!)

Lawyer (requires a B.Sc. + law school) (lawyers with a background in science are in demand due to complex patent law issues and criminal defense of DNA evidence).

Medicine (typically requires a B.Sc. + med school)

    Teaching (K-12)((typically requires a B.Sc. + teacher's college)

In terms of industries where people with generics training are employed:

    Biotechnology

    Pharmaceutical

    Government

    Universities

    Education

    Medicine

    Agriculture

  2. Well, I know there is Genetic Counseling, which I am interested in.  They can test for genetic disorders, tell you the chance that your child will have a certain disease and lots of other stuff.  I also know that there is Genetic Engineering and being a Geneticist.  Genetic Engineering deals with cloning, but there is also a lot more that can be done with that, that is just most commonly known.  A Geneticist does a lot of research and can also work with Genetic Counselors to help patients.  Those are the three main ones that I know about and there is a lot more information and possibilities then what I listed here.
