my mom works for an insurance agent as a representative that files claims and stuff but she barely makes any money and doesn't get health insurance. She has only been in the field for about a year and doesn't have a degree (only some college credit hours). What options does she have?

  1. I'm sorry... MSAD... I retired after 26 years as a CAT team supervisor, and property adjuster and my last years salary was $72K.  I was in college when I started working for them part time.  my degree is in Business, so it was pretty much useless.  A college degree is NOT a must in the insurance industry.

If she gets her certification as a property inspector, check into NPI.. she can contract out insurance companies, escrow companies..... I have a degree, only because i had a scholarship and it was going to make my family happy for me to go.

I had a good job and they didn't care if I had any college or not.  26 years later... I have certificates of appreciation from Oklahoma City for the Cat Team work after the bombing of the Murrah Building - we didn't insure the federal building, but we insured a lot of the office buildings that were damaged in the impact.  we were also there when the tornadoes went through OKC, we were in Oakland CA when the Oakland Hills were wiped out by a brush fire.  and I was personally at the world Series in San Francisco when the earthquake hit.  All that took was a call to my boss that I was already there and would contact the local authorities and wait for my team to show up and told him at what hotel I would be.

It's very rewarding work.  when you get pictures in your mail at work months later from one of the insureds that you adjusted their claim... and this is their new home under construction.  You know that you've earned every dime.

I made good money, and I earned every cent

  2. Well first year in an agency you won't make much.  I have been a licensed agent for about 19 yrs and I have been in my agency for 14 yrs as an account manager (I handle everything except claims for over 1000 personal accounts) & I am JUST in the range you have there.  So, what she should do, get a little experience & then try to get into another agency that offers health insurance.  Many agency people don't have degrees, I have a BS in Mathematics which is helpful in insurance, but not mandatory.  If she wants to move up in her office, to management, she may want to think about taking more college classes.  Also, getting her P&C License should increase her salary.

  3. With out a degree her options will be limited.

In order to be an adjuster or an underwriter - you have to have a college degree. It does not matter what it's in....but you have to have it.

I don't know about agents. I can tell you....most are not going to make 40,000+ right out of the gate.
