  1. Well, it depends upon what you mean by cheap.  Among the new cars, the Chrysler Sebring, the Mazda Miata, the Pontiac Solstice and the Saturn sports car are relatively inexpensive, as is the Chrysler P/T Cruiser.  For a little more, you can get the Mini Cooper, which is essentially a BMW.

As to used cars, surprisingly, the Jaguar XK8s can be had reasonably.  I have owned a couple of these, one was the standard XK8 and the second one was the XKR, which is the supercharged version of the XK8.  Maintenance is high on these, which is why they have low resale, but it is not uncommon to find one 4-5 years old with under 50K for under $20K.  A pretty good buy when you consider it was an $80K car new.

Also, because rental companies lease the Sebrings alot, and resell them after a year or two, those can often be found cheap.  You do not want to buy one of these, however, with much over 50K as typically they need a news transmission at around 70-80K, unless, of course, you factor that into your negotiations on price.

The VW Beetle convertibles are also not terribly dear, but owing to a plague of electrical problems that have afflicted VW products of late, I would be a little leary.

  2. Depends on what you call cheap.

The Mazda MX-5 (miata) is nice in the mid $20's, and they come with a vinyl top or a power retractable hard top. The VW Beetle comes in a power convertible top too.

The dealerships will basically give you a PT Cruiser convertible these days.

  3. You can get used Toyota Solaras (my personal favorit.. very sleek looking car) and used Chrystler Sebrings for a decent amount of money, and both are good looking.
