It was used every Saturday morning in cartoons featuring the Lone Ranger in the early sixties, for at least two years, but it was also used in various cartoons from Warner Brothers studios before, during, and after World War II because it was good for a cheap laugh. Almost everyone in the U.S.A. recognized "The William Tell Overture" because it was used as the theme of the "Lone Ranger" radio program (and was also used in a Lone Ranger movie serial). Whenever movie audiences heard the song used in a movie theater, they automatically laughed due to what is known as "the shock of recognition." Generally, "The William Tell Overture" was featured in cartoons, but it was also used for a cheap laugh in Frank Capra's "Meet John Doe" and was played by Gary Cooper on harmonica and Walter Brennan on ocarina.
