  1. RAJ PUTS

  2. Yes...I agree with you. My former wife was a Sikh and her last name is Kaur. All of her brother have the last name Singh. Her son's last name is Khalsa. I guess this is common for this religion.

  3. THE QUESTION IS  NOT JUST INTERESTING  BUT INTELLIGENT TOO .The facts are plenty and data is enormous but let's stick to the thrust of the question.May i also add that my views are based on practical situations prevailing in the current social setup around me and entirely observation based.

the answer is simple and plain-THERE IS NO PARTICULAR

ONE SINGLE CASTE AMONG HINDUS/INDIANS UNDER WHICH THIS  SURNAME  EXCLUSIVELY FALLS OR BELONGS TO.FURTHER, IT IS NOT A SUB CASTE BUT BASICALLY A TITLE  INDICATING  A SPECIFIC CATEGORY OF PEOPLE AMONG A PARTICULAR CASTE WHO ARE AFFIXING IT AS AN IDENTIFICATION SYMBOL  AND THE OBJECTIVE  AND MEANING THEREOF  IS STRICTLY AND SOLELY  SUBJECT TO THEIR  OWN  INTERPRETATION / PARAMETERS  ASSOCIATED  WITH THEIR CASTE.

In simple words it  also means that singh is a universal title (excusive to india ,of course!)used widely in the indians from northern ,north western andcentral indian states and is supposed to be referring to a specificgroup /category(not sub caste)among these castes regarding usage of which they have the best  justification and historical/religious interpretations.e.g For sikhs, for rajputs, for jats or for any one else, using it may mean a differet   connotation altogather.

Obviously ,there are no rules /laws governing its  usage except for the age old practice of inheriting it in the family or in the community concerned as per their own guidlines.

I  hope i have been judicious in my interpretation and addressed your doubt in  a reasonably  comprehensible     format. however you may react for more information  at wishmewell@sifymail.com .Wishing  you more discoveries of  knowlledge on yahoo.

  4. always thought they were a warrior caste in themselves with an internal caste system outwith the traditional Hindu system

  5. The current population of those named Singh would not fit within the Indian Caste system.  Sihkh men adopt the name Singh (while the women adopt Gaur) as part of their religious rituals.  On can BE Sihkh without having to be Punjabi.  We have a lot of "White Sihkhs" here, in the US.  Even with the legal name change to "Singh," one cannot fit them into an outdated Indian caste.

  6. They are definitely punjabis, but mostly tend to be sikh......

  7. Rajputs in north India have  traditionally used  Singh as the second part of their name.Following Guru Gobind Singh, Sikh men ( irrespective of the caste)  have done so.May be at one time Singh was a  rough caste indicator but   it was never a caste name.

Zail Singh,Manmohan Singh, etc are Sikhs, while   Mulayam Singh,Arjun Singh , etc,  come from different caste backgrounds.

  8. except punjabi s there r like some in haryana tjey are not called jatt ,they known by jaat, also singh,

  9. Singh is usually followed by . .

    1. Chandel

    2. Mohil

    3. Thakur

    4. Chauhan

etc.  Yes , all are Rajput castes.

  10. Singh (Hindi:, Punjabi: , Gujarati: Sinh) is derived from the Sanskrit word Siṃha meaning "lion".[1] It is used as a common surname and middle name in North India by many communities, groups and peoples, especially the Rajputs and the Sikhs

Singh was first used as a surname by the Rajputs beginning in the 7th century[6]. It has been common practice among the Rajput men to have Singh as their middle name.[7] The Rajputs started using Singh in preference to the classical epithet of "Varman".[8]

The Sikhs adopted Singh as a surname in 1699, as per the wish of Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru.[9] In the Spring of 1699, on the day of Baisakhi, Guru Gobind Singh (originally named Guru Gobind Rai), made it mandatory for all Sikh males to append the name suffix Singh after their name. Singh is used as a middle name or as a surname (see naming patterns section) by approximately 10 million adherents of Sikhism.[10]

Apart from the Sikhs and the Rajputs, several other groups in India have also adopted Singh as either a middle name or a surname. Some of these include the Yadavs (e.g. "Mulayam Singh Yadav"), the Bhumihars, the non-Sikh Punjabis, the Gujjars (e.g. "Nirbhay Singh Gujjar"), and the non-Sikh Jats (e.g. "Maharaja Bhim Singh Rana").

Contrary to the popular belief that Singh is only used by Punjabis, Singh is used by a wider population from Punjab to Uttar Pradesh and from Kashmir down into Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Maharastra to Nepal as well as the far eastern states of Manipur, Assam, Tripura, Sikkim and even Bhutan, spanning the entire subcontinent and even reaching Southeast Asia. It is also found in use among West Indians of Indian origin namely in places of Guyana, Trinidad and Surinam, as well as people of Indian origin found in Mauritius and Fiji Island.

The use of Singh in Hindus as a middle name or last name denotes automatically that they are from the Kshatriya varna and are of the Rajput sub-caste or are descended from them where intermarriages have happened with Jats and Gujjars etc..[citation needed] Original occupation of Kshatriyas and Rajputs was of being warriors and rulers, many families under different circumstances over the centuries intermarried or changed their profession to being farmers, carpenters etc. but retained Singh in their name denoting their ancestry and original family genealogy and caste
