What caste does the surname SARDAR belong to?

I know someone with the surname SARDAR.He says he is jat sikh..could someone confirm this or tell me which sikh/hindu catse this surname belongs to.

  1. Sardar is a common surname found in Gujarat(kathiawaris). These were low-caste warriors who were forced to do base/degrading work during the Mughal era. My mom's surname is sardar. Maybe the guy who pretends to be a Sikh is a belongs to a low caste, hence his family must have converted to Sikhism. I hate casteism it's blot on the social fabric of India. Persians and the Kurdish were Hindus at some point of time. They were driven out/converted forcefully/killed/enslaved by the Muslims. The rest managed to flee and were pursued until they came to India (the present India) former Aryavart (with persia, afghanistan, balochistan, parthia etc.)and settled in Gujarat eventually spread to the other parts of country.
