Afro-Latino or African-American ? which? im very confused here because first they were saying that haitians were afro-latino and another said that they are not because they were too black, then i was saying that they were african american but to be an african american you have to be of african ancestry, english speaking and living in the u.s. haitians are not like that so i was thinking of sayin afro carribean but a black person from cuba would be an afro carribean too. im so confused? so which? i just say caribbeano!!! what your opinion?

  1. Neither.

Haiti (part of Hispanolia) was originally settled by the Spanish.  However, they imported a half a million slaves from Africa, who revolted in the 18th Century; after a prolonged struggle, they declared themselves an independent black nation in the early 1800s.

The country is now 95% black and 5% mulatto and white.

  2. My brother's gf is haitian and moved to the US when she was like 9 years old. At first I thought haitians were latin too however i was suprised to find out that many haitians find it an insult to be called "spanish" or "latin" that is because they pride themselves on being the first AFRICAN nation in the western hemisphere and also because of the strained relationships with the dominican republic. Haitians are most accuratley called Afro-caribbean not african american because they are not U.S citizens they are also not latino because to be latino you must have spanish or portuguese background..most haitians are of mixed  african and french descent or just 100% african. Therefore they are neither..they are afro-caribbean....that's what many prefer to be called

  3. I have been to Haiti and live on an island with a huge Haitian immigration. What is noticeable about the people is that they are so African looking. You can pick them out from the crowd, which is not the case with other Caribbeans. They don't seem to have mixed racially with the Dominicans next door and there is no Latin connection, unless you count the French as Latins. There is no connection with the USA either, so it would be completely incorrrect to use either of the terms you suggest. If you have to categorise them, call them Afro-Caribbean.

  4. First let me say.. Hatians speak French so they are not considered lations because latinos speak spanish . They are neither Afro Americans because they are not Americans, They are plain and simple Hatians .

They were slaves brought to Haiti by the white man.. Haiti was once owned buy France .
