  1. although everyone classes is as a vegetable it is a fruit, and is not as sweet as other fruits.

  2. Fruit

  3. There are two different definitions of "fruit."

Scientifically, it is fruit because it contains seeds.

But in the culinary sense, it is called a vegetable because it is not sweet.

So that's why people tend to call tomatoes vegetables. Cucumbers, avocados, squash, etc., are other fruits that are usually classified as vegetables.

  4. It is technically a fruit, but is mostly seen as a Vegetable

  5. fruity- licious!

  6. Tomatos are a fruit.

  7. I tomato is the enlarged ovary of a tomato plant, therefore it is a fruit, just as cucumbers, pumpkins and avocados are fruits.

  8. I like to think of it as a fregetable.

  9. Botanically, it's a fruit because it has seeds.  Culinarily speaking, it's treated as a vegetable (as are a lot of fruits, like bell peppers, for example.)

  10. "It takes knowledge to know tomatoes are a fruit.

It takes wisdom not to put them in a fruit salad."

It's a fruit, because it has seeds, but it is considered a vegetable-fruit along with aubergines, courgettes/zucchinis, cucumbers and peppers.

Anyway, all fruits and vegetables are great sources of the vitamins and minerals our body's need, so it's helpful to eat a variety of all different types.

    Stay happy and healthy. x

  11. fruit!

  12. Technically, a tomato is a fruit, but most people think of it as a veggie and use it as such.

  13. the united states issued that the tomato was legaly a vegetable in 1893, but it can be argued that the law was made for reasons of tarrifs.

botanically, the tomato is a fruit, because it has seeds and the characteristics of a fruit.

but in cullinary terms, it will always be a vegetable.

  14. The confusion about 'fruit' and 'vegetable' arises because of the differences in usage between scientists and cooks. Scientifically speaking, a tomato is definitely a fruit. True fruits are developed from the ovary in the base of the flower, and contain the seeds of the plant (though cultivated forms may be seedless). Blueberries, raspberries, and oranges are true fruits, and so are many kinds of nut. Some plants have a soft part which supports the seeds and is also called a 'fruit', though it is not developed from the ovary: the strawberry is an example. As far as cooking is concerned, some things which are strictly fruits may be called 'vegetables' because they are used in savoury rather than sweet cooking. The tomato, though technically a fruit, is often used as a vegetable, and a bean pod is also technically a fruit. The term 'vegetable' is more generally used of other edible parts of plants, such as cabbage leaves, celery stalks, and potato tubers, which are not strictly the fruit of the plant from which they come. Occasionally the term 'fruit' may be used to refer to a part of a plant which is not a fruit, but which is used in sweet cooking: rhubarb, for example. So a tomato is the fruit of the tomato plant, but can be used as a vegetable in cooking.

(I guess you can call it a fregetable/frugetable or a vruit)

  15. Botanically speaking, it's a fruit.  Culinarily speaking, it's a vegetable.  Either way, they're pretty darn tasty in a salad, and they're very good as a spaghetti sauce (and good for you!).
