  1. An earthquake in a body of water.

  2. Tsunamis are caused by underwater earthquakes. When the earth shifts up and down the motion is transferred into the water. This energy radiates outward (like the ripples when you drop something in a pond) when it reaches the shallow water near the shore it causes the water to rise and eventually crashes on the shore.

  3. Like an earthquake on land, but in the ocean, there is a displacement of land mass either raising or falling causing a major ripple on the water for lack of a better description.

  4. Earthquakes, powerful volcanic eruptions, landslides, asteroid/comet impacts etc.
