Does anyone know what causes hiccups exactly and what to do to prevent them. I get hiccups ALL the time and it's getting really annoying. It's really been this way for years and years. I don't know if I 'm doing something to cause them...but I get hiccups at least twice a day for about twenty minutes, not kidding. I've always wondered what causes them ??

  1. Let me answer part 2 first.  I get the hiccups a lot, and this always works for me, and it's so simple.  Just take a sip or two of water with your nose plugged.

Other people will tell you to eat a teaspoon of sugar or peanut butter.

As for why you get them so often, I don't know. Do you eat too fast?  Pay attention if it only happens after you eat a certain thing.  I would research it on Google or Yahoo.

Next time you see your doctor, be sure you talk about it.   If it's getting out of hand, make an appt. with your regular doctor, and if s/he can't help you, he'll refer you to a specialist. Do you have any stomach problems? Like an ulcer or heartburn?  Hmm...I'm just thinking out loud. If I get them once a day, I get them for sure again the same day,  but I just do my trick, so it's no big deal. But twenty minutes would get old!

Maybe it's time to see the doc.  There may be a really simple answer.

If  you type in the white strip above "How do I get rid of the hiccups?" you'll get tons of answers.  But try typing in "How do I prevent the hiccups?" There might be something there.

Bless you and good luck.  :)

  2. No one really knows why hiccups occur! Try not chewing gum so much, gum always gives me the hiccups. And when I'm upset or worried I hiccup. I know its crazy right! What helps me get rid of them is drinking water and if you put 2 fingers above your eyebrows, tilt your head up, and just press that spot it increases blood flow throughout your body or something and stops hiccups. And it works because I've tried it a few times. I saw this on the discovery channel, it was some medical show and a woman had the hiccups for like 3 days and it worked.

  3. if you drink really fast and it casues airbubbles

    that can casue them

i dont know if this works for everyone but my sister always

takes a glass of water, plugs her nose and spins around 5 times

    while drinking the water

it works everytime for everyone i have told about it:)

    hope it helps

  4. Not sure... nasty food. Hold your breath usually gets rid of them.
