What caused the Armenian Genocide?

Is there any specific event or reason?

basically the turks wanted to expand the islamic area .. the had plans of making an islamic empire consisting of many many countries such as turkey and the countries ending with "istan" .. all those countries were already practicing the islamic religion.. and Armenia was in the middle of it.. Armenia was a christian country who didn't approve on turning to islam.. and the only way turkey could get what it wanted was by erasing the armenians..

Anarchistica, the history student, summed it up exactly and he spoke the truth.  The propaganda from the Turk, who also had his friends come on here and "thumbs up" or "down" the answered he liked, is a lie.  

Turks killed Armenians, that is the truth and many Armenians have no relatives because of it. They could not stand the fact that Armenians are Christians.  

So stop lying -- there are photographs to prove it and even a U.S. Ambassador wrote a book about it and witnessed it.

roles in the most brutal atrocities

against another race which

1.5 million of the Armenian population.

The 70 million Muslims living in a

turkish regime controlled empire  

under a false pretense of fear,

a small minority was falsely presumed

a "threat" in well thought out plan

by the government to kill them.

Today the Turkish government

denies the actions of this regime

as a Genocide, and the mass

murder of 1.5 million innocents

remain ignored.  It is inconceivable

to me how people in this same society

in over 90 year span, remain unchanged

in their views towards humanity.

"You are greatly mistaken. We have this country absolutely under our control. I have no desire to shift the blame onto our underlings and I am entirely willing to accept the responsibility myself for everything that has taken place."

In a conversation with Dr. Mordtmann of the German Embassy in June 1915...

"Turkey is taking advantage of the war in order to thoroughly liquidate (grundlich aufzaumen) its internal foes, i.e., the indigenous Christians, without being thereby disturbed by foreign intervention."

After the German Ambassador persistently brought up the Armenian question in 1918, Talat said "with a smile"...

"What on earth do you want? The question is settled. There are no more Armenians."

"I am ashamed of my nation (Ich schame mich fur meine Nation)."

Minister of the Interior of Turkey publicly declared on March 15 that on the basis of computations undertaken by Ministry Experts...

Basically, it's a matter of culture. The Ottomans (as Turks were called before 1923) were Sunni Muslims and by far the majority of the population. The Armenians were Orthodox Christians (Armenia was the first country with Christianity as state religion) and an oppressed minority (along with Kurds and other peoples).

During the second half of the 19th century the Ottomans and Russia have fought a couple of times. At the same time, Armenians asked to be mistreated a bit less. When things were looking up for Russia during the 1878 war, Armenians figured the Russians could help them out. It is very similar to South Ossetia and Abkhazia now. They found a bully bigger than their own bully and hoped it would be better under that bully.

After having been mass-murdered several times at the end of the 19th century (from 1894), Armenians weren't in a good position. When the Ottomans lost in the first World War (they were allied with Germany and Austria-Hungary), they tried to blame it on the Armenians (who also fought for the Ottomans!). A handful of Armenians did defect to the Russians, but it hardly mattered. Anyway, just like Hitler turned the Jews into a scapegoat, the Turks turned the Armenians into one. And guess who got to do a lot of the killing? The Kurds, who are oppressed and at war with Turkey now.

To sum up:

- Islamic law and Turkish custom mistreated Armenians

- Armenians tried to get help from Russia

- Turkey needed someone to blame their defeat in WW1 on

- Voilà, perfect reason for a genocide

Turkey nowadays denies it happened because Atatürk, the founder of the Turkish republic, was heavily involved. It's like Americans downplaying the role of Washington in the Indian Genocide (the American Indians called him the destroyer of towns!). While the US simply tries to ignore this, Turkey actively opposes the fact it happened, thereby calling everyone's attention to it. Kinda dumb, don't you think?
