What caused the Crimean war? and why did it end?

please dont just copy from wikipedia because i dont understand what they are saying about the war.

  1. Basically, Russia was getting stronger and the Ottoman Empire was getting weaker. Britain and France were afraid of Russia expanding too far towards Constantinople, so they went to war to force Russia to give up the Black Sea fleet and abandon the traditional role it had as protector of the rights of Orthodox Christians in the Ottoman Empire. They were successful in their first aim, but the fleet was re-established in 1871.  

    The war exposed the backwardness of Russia and was a contributing factor in the Russian abolition of the serfdom in 1861: Alexander II saw the military defeat of the Russian serf army by free troops from Britain and France as proof of the need for emancipation, as well as other reforms.

  3. the war was about the dispute over the holy lands and was fought mostly on the eastern side of europe, it was considered the first modern war (meaning: the first war to used modern tactics, weaponry in open battle). the countries involved, russia, england, france, ottoman empire (now known as turkey).

    it ended because of a treaty..
