  1. Everything comes into play. Gravity, Atmosphere, Temperature, their orbits, rotation. I could go on and on.


  2. Io is so close to Jupiter that the gravitational stresses keep the surface half molten. Callisto is so far from the sun that it's surface is largely ice. The moon is dry and inactive.
