Question:

What causes Jelly Fish to be on the Ocean Shoreline?

I just moved to Virginia Beach, Virginia and have visited the Atlantic Ocean about 4 times already this summer. This first 3 times, we saw no signs of Jelly Fish and heard noone complaining about them. The last time we visited the beach (over the 4th of July) we saw them everywhere we looked and didn't want to get in the water for fear of getting stung. Is there any way to predict when they may on the shoreline? Does it have anything to do with the tide, water temperature or weather? I would like to have an ideas so that we can plan visits accordingly or do they just show up at sporadic times? Thanks in advance for all your input!

  1. welll the current probably dragged them in

  2. I agree the jelly fish were really bad over the holiday weekend. I also searched for answers online to determine when the best time to avoid them is. From what I gathered they are more abundent when the weather/ocean is warm and during high tide. The dangerous jelly fish only come in with extreme ocean activity such as a hurricane. I hope this helps.
