There are many elements in your body that work together in affecting and maintaining vitamin D levels, so if you are very deficient or often too low then you should see a doctor to discuss the best treatment plan.  The body makes vitamin D when your skin is exposed to the sun; most scientists recommend at least 15 minutes of sunshine a day whenever possible.  Of course, you don't want so much sun exposure that you burn!  You can also take vitamin D in supplement form.  Apart from that, your levels of calcium and a few other nutrients can affect how well your body maintains vitamin D, so calcium supplements probably wouldn't hurt, either.
