What causes a clutch to need adjusting rather then a new one?

2 years ago I thought that my car needed a new clutch so i took it in to my mechanic to get it fixed he told me that it just needed adjusting so he adjusted it and i cost me $40. Now 2 years later my clutch is acting up again. Its a 2001 Kia Rio 71,000 miles on it. If it was okay two years ago could it just need adjusting again?

  1. IM THINKING IT HAS A CLUTCH SLAVE CYLINDER SYSTEM. WHICH MEANS IT RUNS OFF OF HYDRAULIC PRESURE TO ENGAGE THE THROW OUT BEARING TO THE CLUTCH. THOSE ARE NOT ADJUSTABLE!! IF IT BUILDS AIR IN THE SYSTEM THEN IT WILL ACT JUST LIKE BRAKES DO.... PEDAL GETS CLOSER AND CLOSER TO THE FLOOR TO WORK. SO EITHER THAT IS WHAT THE PROBLEM IS OR THE BANDS ON THE CLUTCH ARE NO GOOD.

  2. just wear and tare.

  3. Clutches have a certain amount of friction material on them, when that gets to thin they must be replaced.

If you have only had 1 prior adjustment you may have enough left to get 1 more adjustment before replacement is necessary.

but with your mileage I doubt it.

    Good Luck!
