What causes ant infestations in and outside your home?

Was over at my in laws and all of a sudden these small and large flying ants began puring in from the window and outside in one room. I know they were ants because they have three sections to their body. Can anyone help?

the ants, a number of different species will have the same behavior, will move into the wall space as a nesting area.  Even if they turn out to be carpenter ants it is doubtful they have been bothering the wood located there.  They basically want the hollow area that creates a warm area to incubate the eggs and larvae. depending on what species of ants that get into those areas can determine what time of year they decide to swarm.  I have been getting calls the last few weeks om odorous house ant swarming , mainly from window areas.
