My son came home from his dad's yesterday, and his diaper smelled so bad, and when I changed it, I found out it was extremely dark, almost black. I had noticed some chocolate on his face when I picked him up, but not sure if thats the culprit. what are all possible causes of this?

  1. OREOS

  2. It may be nothing but the chocolate but black stools are a sign of internal bleeding. If I were you, I should have him examined by a hospital where they can do an x-ray.

I should do this immediately. Is there any tenderness or bruising on your baby?

    Best of luck.

  3. Yes, I think you should ask your doctors advice, don't dismiss this, but Iron is an ovbious answer

  4. If you use a vitamin supplement with iron or baby formula with iron it can cause a dark to almost black stool. The reason I know this my daughter was give Enfamil with iron and her stool was almost black. If this is not the case then it could be a more serious problem like intestinal bleeding and you should call your doctor right away or go to the ER.

  5. an increase in his Iron intake.  more than likely dad fed him some heavy sort of meat product.  Hamburgers are the likely culprit.    But Chocolate will do this also.  nothing to be worried about too much.  Unless he's having a hard time passing.  In any case an extra helping of apple juice will "clear" things up some.

  6. Might want to call your doctor or the hospital ER and ask. I've heard that what makes stool black is blood.
