What causes cold sores?

I've got a cold sore and it's pretty painful. What causes these sores though? How can I prevent them?

Well, there is one thing you can do i have this thing it is called, CarMex and it is things that take away cold sores, and chap lips and i have it works REALLY well! go to wallgreen and it is in the chap stick department and  it helps take away cold sores! it takes about 3-4 days! or less

IT'S NOT HERPIES THEY ARE 2 DIFFERENT THINGS AND I CAN TELL YOU ABOUT THEM YOU DONT HAVE HERPIES!!!!!!

i think you can get them from other people if you kiss them, but you can just get them randomly. theres not really a way to avoid them, but i gargling warm salt water makes them a little better
