What causes conception to be so difficult to achieve?

Question

Just curious: if you're doing everything correctly on your fertile days and don't have any problems health wise, why would it take so many tries to conceive?

Its just a weird thing to me.

I totally agree with this question. I feel like couples who are not trying get pregnant by accident and make it seem so easy and them couples who are trying to conceive have such a hard time. It almost seems like when you are not thinking about it and making it a science you have a harder time them when you are relaxed, have fun, and not think about it. Kind of like when couples with fertility issues get pregnant after they adopt, once you stop trying it happens. Sorry that is not really advice i just think it is an interesting topic as well.

Before we were ttc I thought you just had s*x and then a baby would come.  When we decide to try I bought a book "Taking Control of Your Fertility" and boy was I shocked.  There is a lot that goes into conception!  A lot of variables have to be just right in order for it to happen.  Have a couple friends that are very healthy but it took them a while.  Who knows exactly why.  Some people take many tries b/c they don't know that one of them may have a problem.  Everyone woman and man is different and the "stars" just have to align so to speak.

Oh, well I had someone send me a link to a PBS special on conception that has been broken down into like 6-7 min segments.  I had no idea what the little guys had to go through to get to the egg and how hard it actually is for them and WHY the chances for conception are so low every month (like 20-25%).  Here is the link if you would like to check it out.  It's very well done and so informative.  Segments 3 and 4 are where you'll find the best information!  Enjoy!
