  1. By far the most common reason is changes of temperature usually chilling of the surface water so it sinks which happens with fresh or salt water.  Following on this would be the lighter density fresh water of rivers entering oceans which produces layering effects and temperature changes.


  2. Differences in density, due to changes in temperature or salinity.
