  1. Hi,

I think I understand what you are asking since I know the subject. In order for any 2 digital devices to exchange and transmite digital (1 or 0) data, the two devices must first introduce each other. This is done using a series of commands called handshake commands. When the the two devices introduce each other then they start their job. An example of this would be your upconverting DVD player and your HDTV connect each other by an HDMI cable. When you turn the tv on and the DVD player on they introduce themself, thereafter the DVD player is ready to send the actual video and audio signals to the tv. When they introduce themself, they keep a seperate signal through the the HDMI cable, sometime this identification signal breaks up so the tv and the DVD player no longer knows each other. As a result the movie you were watching suddenly freezes or goes blank. This only true in digital, in analog there's no handshaking so there's no break up unless you cut the cable with a pair of flyers.

    Hope this helped!
