Question:

What causes exhaust smoke to be blue? Some oils are labeled as "low smoke" and I have seen a "smokeless" ?

I think a dye may have been added to the oil to alert motorists that their car is burning oil, otherwise without it, the engine may run out of oil if there is no viisual indication that oil is being burned. (Same principal as adding an odorant to natural gas.) Any ideas?

  1. I don't know how people get so far off track. No there is no smoke additive.  Cars with properly working Cat converters can burn up about a qt of oil every 1000 miles with no smoke. Only when the cat converter is cold will the motor smoke go past the cat converter(s). It is the piston rings and valve guides and guide seals that allow oil out of the crankcase and drain down out of the Cyl heads to be burned in the combustion process. After the Cat converter becomes oiled and is no longer working does the car produce smoke from the excessive engine wear / worn items above. There is a dip stick to alert people there is low oil in the crank case. Some cars have a light (LOW OIL)

  2. Motor oil that is burned along with the fuel in a four stroke internal combustion engine will produce a bluish-white smoke.  The oils you are talking about are for two-stroke engines in which oil must be added to the fuel for proper combustion and lubrication.

  3. oil is black smoke not blue

blue smoke could be a sign of your pistons misfiring

  4. Blue oil is for garden tools, 2 strokes and chainsaws.

If your car burns oil first of all - don't ever use Pennzoil - they can sue me but I told them their oil evaporates and they did not reply.  disclaimer - In My Opinion Pennzoil disappeared.  Maybe someone stole it?

Low smoke means that additives are in.  It doesn't work, use pure oil, a good grade such as Castrol GTX or Lucas, money is nothing vs. a $3500 to $100,000 engine.

USE HEAVY DUTY OIL, FOR OLDER ENGINES, EVEN IF YOUR ENGINE IS NEW.  SYNTHETICS ARE CONTROVERSIAL, LET YOUR ENGINE SLIP, AND WEAR OUT PARTS BY SHEER OVER rpm AND NOT ENOUGH RESISTANCE AND BACK PRESSURE - LIKE CENTRIFUGAL FORCE, THEY FLY APART.

NOW THE SOLUTION.  I ADD WYNN'S EXTEND IF A RACE OR VENUE IS SPONSORED BY WYNNS AND GTX with LUCAS 99 PERCENT OF THE TIME.

Oil is never enough.  There's twice the life with $10 more each time you build an engine or change oil @ 3,000 miles, and I can get 10,000 miles on oil if filtered & necessary to prove a point.

  5. Last I checked oil burned white. Every time I've seen blue smoke it was from an engine that wasn't burning fuel right.

My family's diesels do it when its cold out and a little 4 cylinder gas pickup truck does it cause of bad piston rings.

  6. from what i've heard is that your piston rings might need to be replaced. worn out rings allow too much oil to get into the cylinders causing the oil to burn with the fuel.

  7. Oil will always create blue smoke.
